West Wing, Dirleton
Type: Residential - Extension & internal renovations
This 18th century farmhouse was significantly altered and extended to provide a home fit for modern family life.
The contemporary extension provides an open-plan kitchen / living area, as well as a new entrance and utility room, whilst respecting the historical character of the Listed Building.
Process
We were commissioned to alter and extend this listed property to provide better connection to the outdoors. A new flexible kitchen and living space was created, complete with bi-fold doors that open to a Japanese themed garden.
Internally, the original stonework was left exposed, emphasising the connection between old and new and, as a predominantly north-facing extension, a large rooflight was installed to bring additional light.
Natural sandstone was selected to match the existing building and will weather in time to blend and embed the extension. A cantilevered, flat roof and fibre cement reveals provide a contemporary edge that connect the spaces whilst minimising impact on the existing building.
